Disaster and Emergency Preparedness
Herkimer County Public Health is committed to protecting the community by preparing for and responding to public health emergencies. Our Public Health Preparedness Program ensures that we are ready to address a wide range of threats, including biological, chemical, and radiological incidents, as well as natural disasters, disease outbreaks, and other emergencies that impact public health.
How We Prepare and Respond
Our team works closely with local, state, and federal agencies to:
- Develop and implement emergency response plans to protect public health.
- Train and coordinate with healthcare providers, first responders, and community organizations to ensure a rapid and effective response.
- Conduct emergency preparedness exercises to improve response capabilities.
- Educate the public on emergency preparedness to help individuals and families stay safe during a crisis.
- Distribute essential medical resources and information in the event of a public health emergency.
Community Preparedness
Being prepared for emergencies is a shared responsibility. We encourage residents to:
- Stay informed about potential hazards in the community.
- Have a family emergency plan in place.
- Maintain an emergency supply kit with essential items such as food, water, medications, and important documents.
- Sign up for local emergency alerts and notifications.
