Rabies Prevention and Control
Rabies is a serious but preventable viral disease that affects both humans and animals. Herkimer County Public Health is committed to protecting residents by providing rabies prevention, education, vaccination clinics, and treatment guidance to reduce the risk of rabies exposure in our community.
Rabies Vaccination Clinics for Pets
To help prevent the spread of rabies, we offer low-cost rabies vaccination clinics for domestic pets, including dogs, cats, and ferrets.
- Clinics are held throughout the year at various locations.
- Vaccinations are available for a nominal donation.
- Clinic dates are advertised in local newspapers, posted in town halls, and listed on our website.
Keeping pets up to date on rabies vaccinations is critical for preventing the spread of rabies and protecting both animals and humans.
Rabies Exposure & Treatment
Our department provides guidance and support for individuals who may have been exposed to rabies.
- Pre-exposure rabies vaccination is available for individuals at higher risk, such as animal control officers, veterinarians, and wildlife rehabilitators.
- Post-exposure treatment is covered by Herkimer County Public Health if prior authorization is obtained.
- Specimen handling and testing are available for suspected rabies cases in animals.
